Mushroom Beta-Glucan: Why "Mushroom Poop" is a Staple in My Diet

Mushroom Beta-Glucan: Why "Mushroom Poop" is a Staple in My Diet

Medicinal mushrooms have gained popularity as superfoods and nootropics due to their extraordinary benefits on your immune system and overall health.

Did you what is the one superfood mushroom that no one is talking about yet that may boost your immune system more than anything else?

Mushroom poop!

Mushroom poop?! You can’t be serious, Drew.

Oh, yes, I am serious, my friend.

Of course, I am not talking about actual......well, you know. I am talking about mushroom extract, specifically reishi mushroom extract.

Reishi mushroom extracts possess powerful immune-boosting qualities that can protect your from illness because of beta-glucans.

In order to experience the full spectrum immune-boosting and health supporting effects of medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi, beta-glucans must be released from the mushroom cells. Reishi doesn’t even need to use the toilet to release these super compounds.

There is powerful ultrasonic extracting technology for that!

In case, you are still wondering beta-whaaat I'm talking about, let me break it down for you. Let’s discuss what are mushroom beta-glucans, what are their benefits, potential side-effects, and how to use them. Let’s dive in.

What Are Mushroom Beta-Glucans?

Beta-glucans are a substance that may offer various health benefits to humans, including boosting the immune system, restoring immune balance, and regulating immune responses.

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are large molecules that are made up of many smaller sugar molecules. Beta-glucans can be found in various foods, including oats, barley, and mushrooms.

Mushroom beta-glucans are found in mushrooms.

Medicinal mushrooms have two forms of polysaccharides, alpha-glucans, and beta-glucans. However, beta-glucans are the type that offers the most health benefits in mushrooms.

Mushroom Species Containing Beta Glucans

Mushroom species containing biologically active, beneficial beta-glucans include:

  • Lentinus edodes, or shiitake mushrooms contain lentinan beta-glucans
  • Ganoderma lucidum, or reishi mushrooms, contain GI-1 beta-glucans
  • Trametes versicolor, or turkey tail mushrooms, contain PSK/PSP beta-glucans
  • Girfola frondosa, or maitake mushrooms, contain grifolan, maitake D-fraction beta-glucans
  • Schizophyllym commune, or spitgill mushrooms, contain schizophyllan beta-glucans
  • Pleurotus spp., or oyster mushrooms, contain pleura beta-glucans
  • Flammuline veluptis, or enoki mushrooms, contain flammulin beta-glucans

My favorite sources of mushroom beta-glucans come from reishi mushrooms.

Immunological Changes Caused by Mushroom Beta Glucans

Mushroom beta-glucans may trigger various immunological changes in the body, including:

  • Activating the immune cells
  • Increasing antibody production
  • Increasing immune activity against various cancers
  • Inhibiting tumor metastasis
  • Reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Increasing interferon production

Uses of Mushroom Beta Glucans

Mushroom beta-glucans may be used for various things.

Since mushroom beta-glucans may boost your immune system, they may also protect you from cold and the flu, and may even help prevent cancer. They may also increase your body’s ability to fight stress.

Mushroom beta-glucans are used for various health issues in alternative and natural medicine, including:

  • Allergies
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Skin problems
  • Wrinkles
  • Pain after surgery
  • Cancer sores

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Liver problems
  • Weight loss

Benefits of Mushroom Beta Glucans

Mushroom beta-glucans have various health benefits. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

1. Immunity

Research shows that reishi mushrooms beta-glucans may have the ability to strengthen your immune system, lower inflammation, and fight infections that may attack your body. No wonder reishi is called the “Mushroom of Immortality” and the “Mushroom of Longevity”

Research has found that reishi mushroom may benefit men with urinary tract infections. It may also boost the immune system in those with cancer.

2. Anti-Cancer Characteristics

Research has found that mushroom beta-glucans may have anti-cancer benefits. They may be able to slow the growth of tumors and regulate tumor genes.

Mushrooms including reishi, cordyceps, and maitake may also increase the benefits of chemotherapy treatment.

Beta-glucans in maitake mushrooms may also help decrease liver, lung, and breast tumors, and may even benefit brain and stomach cancer and leukemia patients when combined with chemotherapy. Furthermore, beta-glucans in reishi mushrooms may benefit late-stage lung cancer patients.

3. Digestive Benefits

Research has found that mushroom beta-glucans in oyster and shiitake mushrooms may increase the resistance of intestinal mucose to inflammation and lower the risk of intestinal ulcers and digestive troubles.

4. Insulin Production

According to research, beta-glucans in maitake mushrooms may increase insulin production and may be a part of successful diabetes treatment. They may also suppress Candida overgrowth, which may be the precursor of diabetes.

5. Cholesterol Regulation

Scientists found that mushroom beta-glucans may reduce cholesterol levels and as a result benefits one’s sugar and fat metabolism.

6. Liver Detox and Health

According to various studies, reishi mushrooms may benefit the liver.

7. Allergy Prevention

Research has shown that beta-glucans may improve resistance to allergies. I know I'm willing to give it a go if I can make it through the spring without sneezing!

8. Spiked Energy Levels

Research has found that reishi mushrooms may increase energy and decrease fatigue. It also seems that reishi may benefit endurance exercise.

9. Reduced Muscle tension

According to a study, reishi mushrooms may reduce tension and help muscle relaxation.

Side Effects and Interaction of Mushroom Beta Glucans

Mushroom beta-glucans are generally safe for most adults and there are no known side effects when eating them. Though, getting beta glucan injections may cause headaches, joint pains, back pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blood pressure changes, rashes, decreased urine and decreased white blood cell count in some rare cases.

It is always beneficial to be slow and careful at first, taking a small amount and watching your body’s reactions for potential allergies, sensitivities, or side-effects.

There isn’t enough evidence to support mushroom beta-glucan use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. So I always recommend talking to your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding before taking mushroom beta glucans or any natural superfood that isn't a part of your regular diet.

People with AIDS/HIV or AIDS-related complex (ARC) may develop keratoderma, which are thick skin patches on the feet and hands as a result of the yeast in mushroom beta-glucans. The conditions are treatable, however, you may want to talk to your doctor before taking mushrooms beta-glucans if you have these conditions.

Since mushroom beta-glucans are such a powerhouse and may increase the immune system, they may also interact with and decrease the effectiveness of immune system suppressing drugs. There are no other drug interactions known at this point, however, it is always the safest to talk to your healthcare professional if you are taking any medication.
