One the natural remedies for depression, backed by science, is a powerful spice called turmeric.
Turmeric is a popular yellow-colored Indian spice. It originates from Asia and has been used for thousands of years in Indian Ayurvedic, Chinese traditional medicine and Asian dishes for its medicinal properties. The medicinal power of turmeric comes from its active ingredient, curcumin.
Turmeric has countless benefits. It can improve inflammation in your body, ease pain, reduce DNA damage, fill your body with antioxidants, prevent and help with cancer, improve your digestive system, help with symptoms of diabetes, improve autoimmune conditions and improve depression and anxiety.
Turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years in Ayurvedic and Chinese traditional medicine for a long list of ailments and pain, including mental health issues, such as depression. In recent years, the Western world has been catching up to ancient wisdom and an increasing number of people improve their depression by the help of this natural medicine.
The profound benefits of turmeric on depression are not just word of mouth, but researchers have been discovering mounting evidence that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has the potential to reduce symptoms of depression.
A 2014 randomized controlled trial on 60 patients over a period of 6 weeks found that curcumin is effective for the treatment of major depression. The group of participants was divided into 3 groups: one group was treated with curcumin, the second group was treated with fluoxetine, a psychiatric medication and the third group was treated with both.
The curcumin group had shown a 62.5% improvement on the Hamilton Depression Scale, whereas the fluoxetine group showed 64.7% and the combination group showed 77.8%. The results show that curcumin can be just as effective as psychiatric medications and can work effectively in combination with medication as well.
Another 2014 study found the same results. According to their research on 56 patients, 500 mgs of curcumin can be effective in improving the symptoms of major depression. After 8 weeks, participants improved their scores on the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology self-rated version (IDS-SR30), their IDS-SR30 factor and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).
A 2015 study on 30 obese individuals dealing with depression and anxiety found that 1 gram of curcumin a day can improve depression and anxiety. Participants improved their score on the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) after only 30 days.
Most recently, a study published in 2017 has supported the antidepressant effects of curcumin. The study included 123 individuals with major depressive disorder. Some were administered a low-dose (250 mg), others were given a higher dose (500 mg) of curcumin, a third group received placebo, while a fourth group received a psychiatric medication, saffron and a low-dose of curcumin over 12 weeks.
Results were measured on the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology self-rated version (IDS-SR30) and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The study has found that scores were improved in the groups receiving curcumin and also in the group receiving curcumin and medication, though no differences were found between doses of curcumin and whether it was used alone or in combination with medication.
These studies all suggest that curcumin can be beneficial for those dealing with depression. Furthermore, they also suggest that it can benefit those who decide to improve their depression symptoms completely naturally, as well as those who are also considering the help of psychiatric medication.
There are various forms of turmeric that you can find on the market.
Though it is much less common than ginger root, you can find fresh turmeric root at health food stores and Asian supermarkets. You can add turmeric to your green juices, make turmeric juice shots, or brew some turmeric tea. You can slice or grade the root and add it to your dishes.
A more common way to find turmeric is by going into the spice aisle and buying powdered turmeric. Not all spices are the same quality though, so make sure to buy high-quality and organic turmeric powder. It may be more pricey, but is is much more effective.
When cooking with turmeric, keep in mind that it needs some fat in order to absorb well in your body. Turmeric is a fat-soluble herb. This means that turmeric dissolves in fat. Without fat, it has a difficult time making it from your stomach into your bloodstream. Adding coconut oil or other healthy fats to your dishes can help this process.
Black pepper is another magic trick that can improve the absorption of turmeric (more on that soon). Don't just slice your turmeric over a salad, but add a little fat and sprinkle some black pepper on your dishes too.
Sprinkling a little turmeric on your homemade curry is not enough to get the full benefits of turmeric. Though turmeric teas and turmeric juice shots can help a lot, supplements may just be the best way to add enough turmeric into your diet in order to notice results quickly.
Though there are many turmeric supplements - pills and powders - out there, they are not created equal. Choose high-quality, organic supplements from trusted companies with great reviews.
Hint: Organifi Gold is your best bet. We use the best quality organic ingredients out there from well-trusted sources because we want the best for you.
There is a difference between consuming turmeric and absorbing turmeric. Piperine, the active ingredient in black pepper, can actually increase the bio-availability of turmeric by 2000% as shown by a 1998 study.
Since then countless other studies have studied curcumin and piperine working together effectively and have shown that black pepper enhances the absorption of turmeric. According to a 2013 study, curcumin and black pepper combined can even be effective in the remedying of multidrug-resistant cancer.
If you are cooking with turmeric, make sure to add some black pepper to the mix to increase absorption. When shopping for turmeric supplements, turmeric powders and superfood mixes with turmeric, not only make sure that it's high-quality organic, but that it is also made with the combination of black pepper.
