How to Create the Perfect Smoothie + 8 Recipes

Green smoothies are a smart and delicious way to nourish your body with vitamins and minerals, increase your fiber and protein intake, and add more greens, veggies, and fruits to your life. They’re like ice cream shakes that are healthy!

Smoothies are fantastic for breakfast, snacks, post-workouts, and in some cases, as a meal replacement. The best part is, they’re completely customizable, so you can find the taste combination that’s perfect for you.

Try These Perfect Smoothie-Making Secrets

  • You need a good blender. You can make smoothies with any blender, but if you’re making them every day, you may want to invest in a high-quality smoothie blender. Your mixes will be more consistent, without chunks of ice or unprocessed veggies.
  • Choose a liquid base. Your options are endless. For lighter smoothies, use water or coconut water. For creamier and more filling smoothies, choose milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or other plant milk. For more creative options, try tea, cold coffee, or Green Juice.
  • Choose your greens and veggies. Green smoothies are all about greens and veggies. Kale, spinach, lettuce, collard greens, and bok choy are all excellent choices. You may add parsley, cilantro, or other herbs. For vegetables, you can choose light watery veggies like cucumber or celery, or root veggies like carrots or beets.

    • Choose your fruit. You can use frozen or fresh fruits. If you are worried about your sugar or calorie intake, remember, even half a banana is enough for sweet fruits. Add plenty of low-GI berries that are abundant in antioxidants. Berries, bananas, pineapple, mango, apples, kiwis, and dates are all fantastic options for any smoothie.
    • Choose your thickener. Flaxseed meal, chia seeds, protein powder, oats, and yogurt are all excellent options. Add as little or as much as you desire.
    • Choose your fat. Healthy fats can play an important role in smoothies, making them creamier and more filling. Almond butter, avocados, coconut oil, cashews, and pecans are all good choices.
    • Choose your flavoring and boosters. Your options are endless. Add lemon, lime, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, honey, mint, vanilla, maca, spirulina, coconut flakes, cacao powder, and any spices or superfoods.
    • Add ice, if you want to. This is absolutely optional but can make your smoothie even more refreshing.

Smoothies really are easy to make and they get easier the more you practice. Try these 8 favorite go-to green smoothie recipes, and you’ll be off to a great start.
