How to Prevent Hair Breakage: Collagen Supplements & 8 Other DIY Tips

When my hair is on point, I feel all powerful.

I’ve always secretly felt that my hair made me a little like Samson.  When my hair is down and I’m rocking bouncy locks that glisten in the sun I feel unstoppable. That’s not to say that I feel less worthy in a top bun, or that I feel all my power is in my hair, but I do feel there’s a connection between how healthy hair looks and feels, and how I present myself that day.

Healthy hair, skin, and nails have a way of adding a spring to your step.

Which is why I think I’m not the only one who wants to know how to stop hair breakage - both men and women love to care, groom, and play with their hair.

There’s nothing worse than brushing your hair after a shower to find that half of your head is tangled in the brush or have your loved one run their hands through your mane only to have pieces of it tangled, stuck or torn on their fingers … Especially when you try to take such good care of it!

Raise your hand if you want to know how to stop hair breakage

I have a feeling you’re here because you’re with me: you’re looking into how to stop hair breakage for good because there’s nothing attractive about flaky, brittle hair, that chips away.

Well, good news: you’re in the right place!

We’re breaking down how to stop hair breakage from the inside out! (pun intended)

I can’t guarantee these tips will work for everyone in the same way but I can assure you I have used them and they worked for me. And after reading this post, you’ll have the tools to design a new routine that helps you prevent hair breakage and make every day a good hair day.

Isn’t that great? Let’s get to it.

How to Stop Hair Breakage:

#1 Eat Your Way to Better Hair

People often say “you are what you eat” and hair is not any different. There are certain nutrients, vitamins, and proteins that help hair grow naturally and keep the integrity of the hair strand skinny-jean-tight for as long as possible.

Start by making sure you’re getting the right amount of protein to your hair. You may be surprised to learn that hair is almost completely made of protein, Keratin to be specific; therefore protein deficiency may lead to hair loss or breakage.

#2 Get Collagen For Hair in Food and Supplements

If you’re looking into how to prevent hair breakage, look no further than your friend collagen; when strands break easily, look dull, get split ends or dry up, it may be a sign of low collagen levels. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body of most animals that participates in the structural formation of most tissue including, bones, muscle, ligaments, tendons, skin, nails, and hair.

Collagen is about 30% to 40% of all the protein content in the body, and it supports keratin production and maintenance. It is naturally produced by the body, and production levels decline with age, leading to -among others- follicle fragility.

How to stop hair breakage with diet? Eat collagen for hair growth! Collagen may be found in certain foods like bone broth, salmon, chlorella, leafy greens, eggs, and cartilage tissue. You may also prefer to use collagen support - like our GLOW superfood drink - to ensure that you are giving your body the nutrients it needs for great hair.

The best collagen for hair supplements has collagen Type I, Type II or Type III in it, as they represent 80 to 90% of the collagen in the body. Additionally, it should have collagen peptides, and potentially vitamins that make it more bioavailable and easier to absorb.

#3 Get Plenty of Vitamin C, A, E, and Biotin

I just made the case of collagen for hair in the How to Stop Hair Breakage Crusade. And now that you know how important it is, you should strive to boost its natural processing and absorption.

Here’s why these vitamins are a must in the fight to prevent hair breakage:

  • Vitamin C increases the absorption levels of collagen, supports natural collagen production and transportation, and is full of antioxidants. Citrus foods are full of vitamin C, and supplements are also available and good for immunity.
  • Vitamin A is a natural antioxidant - which means it attacks free radicals that damage healthy hair cells-  helps hair grow, and generate sebum the natural oil that hydrates hair from the scalp.
  • Vitamin E has been linked to hair growth in patients with alopecia, or who had lost significant hair. It is also a powerful antioxidant and a low-key youth elixir that works wonders on skin and nails.
  • Biotin: or B vitamins are connected to hair fragility and loss. People following vegan or vegetarian diets may often have vitamin B12 deficiency since it is most abundant in animal foods. Consider taking a supplement in addition to your collagen for hair one.

These are all easy DIY things you can do today, either getting supplements for your health or looking for meals that specifically highlight these nutrients.

#4 Avoid Teasing or Combing Your Hair When Dripping Wet

Once you have the diet down: protein and collagen for hair, vitamins, and minerals. The next step in the “how to stop hair breakage for good” routine is to fight your instincts. Your hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, especially under running water or just out of the shower.

Instead of taking on the mane right away, find a soft cotton T-shirt or soft towel to pat dry your hair: do not squeeze it dry, or rub it dry - you’ll end up with half-cut strands.

#5 Wait Before Blow Drying

Following the lines of the previous tip, if you wait a little before you blow dry that luscious mane you’ll see fewer bits caught in the brush in the end. What causes hair breakage? The extra moist and malleability of the hair follicle makes it susceptible to tears.

#6 Hydrate and Moisturize

I hear you “um isn’t that the same thing?” Yes and no; you must hydrate from the inside out to achieve the best results, my favorite is freeze-dried coconut water because it’s good to drink and to use topically.

However, if you’re still curious about how to stop hair breakage on its tracks you should consider natural, organic, and even DIY hair masks that are deeply moisturizing and help seal the layers of the strand that start to split from the main one. Kimberly Elise has eight natural vegan hair masks to try, should you be so inclined.

#7 Use Protection

How to stop hair breakage and breakage of other things? Use protection! Just like you cover knees and elbows while skating or wearing a seatbelt while driving, your hair needs protection against foreign agents like heat, sea salt, chlorine, etc.  I love this super easy DIY heat protection for hair using essential oils.

When you’re heading to the pool or the sea use either an aloe vera protection hair mask, or just lightly rub some coconut oil on your locks to keep it safe; these are perfect biodegradable options for the sea and the pool, and they’re super hydrating. It’s like adding a sealing effect to each strand.

#8 Switch to a Satin or Silk Pillowcase

I was surprised to find out that cotton sheets increase friction at night and as a tosser-and-turner, I was not happy to learn that friction tangles and breaks strands. One of the least orthodox ways how to stop hair breakage, but one of the most shockingly effective.

#9 Get Regular Trims

It’s easy to postpone a visit to the hair salon, but if you’re serious in your search for how to stop hair breakage, and you want to prevent hair breakage - then you need to get regular trims. Cutting off damaged edges will ensure that the healthy and whole strand keeps on growing without risking bits of it to split or peel off.

The Takeaway?

A balanced diet is the number one thing you need to tackle and DIY if you want strong, Samson-powerful hair. Learning how to prevent hair breakage with nutrition will help you make sustainable changes: add supplements with antioxidants, vitamins, protein, and collagen for hair to your everyday meals.

Balance protein and nutrient intake with these easy DIY steps for regular hair care and you’ll never have to look into how to stop hair breakage again.
