Turmeric is one of the most powerful things that nature has to offer. It is a potent inflammation reducing, antioxidant and anti-cancer spice that has been used for thousands of years.
The benefits of turmeric include:
But what does black pepper have to do with turmeric?
The daily recommendation of turmeric is around 450 milligrams of curcumin (the magic compound in turmeric) capsules or about 3 grams of fresh turmeric root daily divided into several doses. The problem is that curcumin doesn’t have the best bioavailability level when taken orally. Even if you are taking turmeric religiously, you may not receive all the benefits due to poor absorption - unless it includes black pepper.
The magic in black pepper is called piperine, a compound that enhances the bioavailability of turmeric.
Researchers from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, India tested the absorption of piperine with curcumin combined. They found that the bioavailability in rats was increased by 154%. This is already a lot, but it turns out that in humans, curcumin taken with 20 mg of piperine bioavailability is increased by 2000%. That’s two-thousand! How powerful that is?! As a bonus, while piperine brings lots of benefits, it doesn’t bring any adverse side-effects.
