A protein Ice cream recipe? Is there such a thing?
Why yes, there is.
When I was coming up with this recipe I was in need of a guilt-free, protein-rich treat to recover after my workouts.
But I wanted it to be more than just a post-workout protein bar; I wanted a real treat, something that no one could refuse.
It got me thinking...
What is the one food that is loved by all ages and comforts everyone?
A meal that’s perfect on a hot summer day, ideal as a dessert at any time, the best friend after a stressful day, brings a sweet touch to any romantic date, makes lovely addition to any dinner party, brings you back happy childhood memories and puts a happy smile on your face any day?
You’ve guessed it - ICE CREAM!
Rich, creamy, succulent and refreshing ice cream. America’s (and the world’s really) favorite summer and all year-treat.
There is only one problem when it comes to ice cream - it’s NOT healthy. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
I know, I am such a party-pooper. But you knew that, didn’t you?
Traditional ice cream that you can find at the grocery store and ice cream shops is full of processed sugar and artificial and processed ingredients that can lead to blood sugar issues, weight gain, inflammation, pain, and even disease.
Non-vegan ice creams are also full of mucus and inflammation-causing dairy that an increasing amount of people are allergic or sensitive to. If you are dealing with chronic pain, inflammation, frequent colds, fatigue or unknown health issues, you may also be dealing with hidden dairy sensitivity.
Does that mean you can never have ice cream again?
Heck no! You can totally enjoy healthy, organic and plant-based ice cream. The best news: you can make your own! And we’re particularly partial to protein ice cream.
A protein ice cream recipe takes the best of both worlds: an undeniably deliciously sweet treat that everyone loves with potent nutrition. Plus it revamps traditional ice cream in a way that not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also nourishes your body in a healthy way.

This Chocolate Chip ‘Nice Cream’, or protein ice cream recipe, is better than anything else you’ll find out there. OK, maybe I’m biased because I came up with it, but a guy can dream no?
It’s not ice cream: it’s a NICE cream - nice to your health and nice to your waistline.
It’s also nice to your taste buds.
This high protein ice cream is made with superfoods you probably already have in your kitchen: bananas, almond butter, maple syrup, and some dairy and soy-free chocolate chips (you might have to get these), plus a couple of added extras for flavor.

The best part? This means you can make a high protein ice cream recipe at home, without needing a lot of ingredients but still keeping all the tasty goodness of traditional ice cream (because who wants quinoa ice cream?)

Makes approx. 2 cups
Instructions: Blend all items in either a food processor or a high-speed blender. Pour into a loaf pan lined with wax paper, cover, then freeze for 4-6 hours.
Optional Chocolate Hard-Shell Recipe:
Instructions: Combine the above ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for 30-second intervals until melted. Drizzle on top of anything cold and it will harden up!
You can top your ice cream with fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, coconut flakes, and cacao nibs. It’s so good. You will want this every day for the rest of the summer… um, I meant the rest of the year.
Ice cream after working out?
Heck yeah. I am in. Are you?!
The great thing about this super simple high protein ice cream recipe is that when I created it I was looking specifically for a post-workout treat. So yes, this is “ice cream” that you can have as a post-workout meal or treat, just like you do with a protein shake or smoothie.
Adding all this protein goodness to your nice cream creates the ideal balance between nutrition and a guilt-free pleasure, the perfect excuse for you to eat it after a workout.
When you exercise and work out your body uses energy stored as glycogen for fuel, which means that after working up a nice sweat and muscle burn your body is partially depleted of glycogen and of some proteins that build and maintain muscle.
Proteins and protein-rich foods (like this nice cream) supply your body with the amino acids it needs to repair and build new muscle.
In fact, consuming 0.14–0.23 grams of protein per pound of body weight (0.3–0.5 grams/kg) soon after a workout is not only encouraged, but recommended.
That’s when this protein ice cream recipe comes in! Providing a whopping ~36g of protein total and 18g per cup, this high protein ice cream kills your cravings and meets your protein goals post-workout in a jiffy.
Instead of giving in to unhealthy ice cream, feeling that you “earned it” you can substitute your guilty-pleasure for a truly nutritious meal that actively works towards your fitness goals and not against them.
For you to achieve your fitness goals recovery must be included in your workout routine. It’s easy to feel guilty by taking time off, enjoying a treat or having a rest day - but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Cooldown sessions (short-term exercise recovery), rest days (long-term recovery), and post workout meals are critical to increase muscle size, improve muscle tone, prevent cell breakdown, repair soft-tissue and remove chemical build-up, so don’t skip it.
