There are a lot of misconceptions around body detox and how to detox your body given that some people associate it with fad diets and nutrition myths, but it’s actually a necessary process our bodies and minds go through every single day!

I’m here to bust the myth that detoxification is unnecessary or a waste of time.

Body detoxification occurs when your body naturally transforms, neutralizes or eliminates unnecessary cells, material, and toxins.

Your blood, liver, kidneys, lymph system, intestines, brain, and even skin are constantly removing impurities, renovating cells, healing broken links, and getting rid of waste - they’re doing it right now as you read this!

When you decide to go through a body detox, you’re only assisting your body in doing the very processes it is already designed to do. You’re just making it a little easier - and faster - on your organs for a specific period, so they can also take a break from the unnecessary junk of our modern lives.

The only difference between organic body detox and practicing one of these strategies is that detox usually happens automatically, and for a few days you’re taking control of the steering wheel. It’s not only a fantastic thing to do for your most precious home - your body - but also a great way to exercise mindfulness and being present.

Why Detox Your Body and Mind?

Because it’s a fantastic way to lose weight, clear mind fog, reduce stress, feel good, boost your metabolism and reset your liver, among many other health benefits.

Detoxification has been used by Eastern and Western medicine for centuries, it’s a staple of Ayurvedic remedies and it’s all about cleansing the body, resting the mind and eliminating toxins so you can nourish yourself with healthy foods and practices, from inside out.

#10 Commit to 30 Days of Yoga - for Free!

One of YouTube’s favorite and friendliest yoga star is Adriene Mishler, who hosts a free 30-day yoga for all challenge every January, for free, on the tube. Yoga with Adriene is gentle, soft and challenging at the same time and will help you connect body and mind. A body detox that takes the physical to wring out the emotional and energetic bodies.

Why it Works: 

You won’t feel intimidated by a yoga studio or class, you can follow at your own pace at home and learn from an experienced teacher whose motto is “Find What Feels Good.” It’s gentle enough a newbie won’t feel rejected, but challenging enough that by day 30 you’ll feel physically stronger. Pro Tip: the 30-day challenges from the past are already available.

#11 Stimulate Blood Flow with Easy Inversions

Relax! Not talking about a headstand, although you are more than welcome to try those. There are easy inversions that help circulation and recharge your muscles. Try legs up the wall for 5 to 10 minutes a day for a month to see how much better your legs feel at the end of the day.

Do a forward fold with bent knees in the morning to bring healthy blood flow to the brain and to bring relief to your lower back, stretch out the hamstrings and strengthen your hips. Do two or three to stretch out slowly and reap the benefits.

Why it Works:

Inversions move blood in the opposite direction, this helps muscles fight inflammation, and oxygenates your organs. They help relieve stress stored in the physical body and calm the mind through conscious breath.

#12 Turn Off Electronics 90 Minutes Before Bed

Now that’s a challenge! Turn off your computer and other electronics 90 minutes before you go to bed, spend time making dinner, talking to loved ones face to face, reading a good book or enjoying a board game.

Why it Works:

Your body will rest better having had a break from blue light emitted by your device’s screen. Melatonin will kick in at the right time, and you’ll give your mind a break from all the social media clutter and information overload our brains go through nowadays.

#13 Kick The Caffeine Habit

Caffeine does wonderful things for your body, but like everything else in life, it is best in moderation. Kick your caffeine addiction by reducing your cups of coffee per day to one and then to none. Make sure you only drink coffee or green tea in the mornings, so your body has the time to flush it out by bedtime, and switch to relaxing beverages at the end of the day.

Why it Works:

Caffeine addictions tend to come from lack of energy, by reducing, restricting and ultimately eliminating caffeine support for energy and allowing quality rest at night, your body will feel naturally energized which will cut your dependency.

#14 Exercise 150 Minutes a Week

“Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, happy people don’t shoot their husbands.” All ‘Legally Blonde’ jokes aside, exercise is a necessary and natural part of life, in our hectic modern life we sit around too much. Get a real full body detox by getting aerobic exercise at least 150 minutes a week - the recommended amount by the American Heart Association.

Why it Works: 

Aerobic exercise revitalizes your muscles, improves circulation, releases endorphins and help you sweat out toxins. It also gives you a great feeling of accomplishment and helps you rest better at night.

#15 Start Your Day Hot and Cold

Contrast showers or hot and cold showers are a great way to detox your body and start your day off right. Simply stat alternating 2 minutes of hot water with 20 seconds of cold water to shock your system and ignite a reboot. It’s hard at first, but as you grow used to it, you'll feel better and better.

Why it Works:

Contrast showers to improve circulation, make you feel more awake in the morning, boost energy levels, and soothes sore muscles. It’s great if you’re in a fat loss or strength training journey!

#16 Stimulate Your Chi

Get an acupressure mat and lay down for 10 to 20 minutes to improve circulation, relieve pain and activate energetic motion in your body. Chi is described as our life-force, it is the Chinese word for “breath,” and other cultures describe it as prana, spirit, etc. Even if you don’t believe in the energetic system, acupressure stimulates specific points in the body and boosts your system through controlled deep breaths.

Why it Works: 

Acupressure mats are affordable and hit many energy spots in the body creating a safe, at-home, alternative to acupuncture. The combination of deep breathing and pressure point relief makes you feel relaxed, while your body’s blood flow increases and you release toxins.

#17 Detox Your Senses with Essential Oils

Lavender, peppermint, orange, three basic essential oils that you can use at home with a diffuser or directly on the skin diluted with coconut oil to reap the benefits of aromatherapy. Use them to accompany mediation sessions or self-massage.

Why it Works:

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the plant’s essence and powers. Aromatherapy is widely used to stimulate or calm the mind through smell.

#18 Detox Your Mind with Gratitude

Start 2019 being grateful for everything you have, everything you’ve learned and the contrast that got you there. The science behind gratitude, affirms that a regular practice of noticing and stating things to be grateful for lifts your mood, making you happier and healthier.

Start every day writing down, stating or sending a friend a voice note, saying 3 to 5 things you are grateful for. Do this every morning as you wake up for a month.

Why it Works:

Forcing yourself to take a moment to account for the good things in your life automatically makes you happier, more present and more resilient. It’s hard to be mad (and fill your body with toxins!) when you notice the many things we can be grateful for.

#19 Do a 30-Day Body Detox Challenge!

Mix and match three or more of these options combining mind and body detoxification strategies to start the year with high energy, improved health and a calmer mind.
